Lithium Ion Battery - Increased Potential

Lithium ion battery is a modified version of lithium battery with about 10 times increased capacity for same mass and volume. A lithium ion battery is a cylinder or a prism shaped cell with a rigid casing of a metal. This rigid metal case presses the separator sheet and the electrodes onto each other.

The electrolyte used in a lithium ion battery consists of a salt which has lithium in it. This is because lithium is a good conductor of electricity and current. This electrolyte is held through an organic solvent.

Lithium ion battery is gaining entry into many products like PDA’s, chargers, controllers and other such devices which need high output current. They also match well with small devices like iPods, music players and gaming consoles. They rate well from their counterparts in terms of high energy density, low internal resistance and high conductivity.

A new version of lithium ion battery is air-fuelled lithium ion polymer which is lighter and fares well in all other aspects of performance. It also does not overheat the battery because of air being used within.

Lithium ion battery must be charged at constant current of 1 to 2 coulomb. However, trickle charging is not advised as it could not avoid overheating. This results in plating of lithium metal and is harmful.

This battery can be stored for one to two months without any visible damage but it should be kept away from heat and sunlight and should be stored in a cool place.
